Trump Economic Advisor Navarro Also Former Democrat

Categorizing U.S. Director of Trade and Industrial Policy Peter Navarro as a “left-wing economist,” U.K.’s The Sunday Times chronicled the rise of the Harvard grad and former Democrat who has called China “the planet’s most efficient assassin.”

His White House influence was buoyed by Jared Kushner’s reported interest in Navarro’s 2011 book “Death by China,” which chronicled the country’s assault on U.S. business and a burgeoning military threat to U.S. national security.

Navarro is also author of “The Coming China Wars” in 2006, which preceded even more growth of influence by China during the Obama administration.

Navarro, a candidate to replace departed chief economic adviser Gary Cohn who had run for office three times unsuccessfully as a Democrat, according to the Times, was once “marginalized” in the White House, despite having Kushner and Trump support.

But White House chief of staff John Kelly’s power has waned after the Rob Porter controversy, allowing Navarro’s anti-China agenda to regain steam that once fueled the Trump campaign messaging during the 2016 election.

Navarro championed the no country exclusions policy on CNN’s “State of the Union” last week, while foreshadowing an upcoming “exemption procedure” another economic adviser candidate – Larry Kudlow – believes will ultimately single out China in the Trump administration’s tariffs on steel and aluminum.
