Tom Steyer Quits Democratic Race for President

Billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer is ending his presidential campaign after a lackluster showing in the South Carolina primary Saturday night.

The news was reported by NBC News while votes were still being tallied in the Palmetto State. Former Vice President Joe Biden won the primary by a wide margin over Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

“There’s no question today that this campaign, we were disappointed with where we came out,” Steyer said in brief remarks. “I think we got one or two delegates from congressional districts, which I thank South Carolina for and the people. But I said if I didn’t see a path to winning, that I’d suspend my campaign. And honestly, I can’t see a path where I can win the presidency.”

Steyer also took a shot at President Donald Trump and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., calling them both “a disaster.” He also said he would like to stay in politics without providing any details.

Steyer had not earned any delegate votes in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada, and he was not expected to earn many in South Carolina.

His campaign had vowed to stay in the race earlier Saturday regardless of the South Carolina outcome, but the decision was later made to quit the race.
