Pence Praises Arpaio as ‘Tireless Champion of Rule of Law’

Vice President Pence on Tuesday heaped praise on former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio — pardoned by President Donald Trump after being convicted of criminal contempt of court — for being a “tireless champion of . . . the rule of law,” NBC News reported.

During a tax event in Arizona, the vice president said he was “honored” by the former sheriff’s attendance.

He also called Arpaio a “great friend of this president and tireless champion of strong borders and the rule of law,” drawing cheers from the crowd.

Arpaio, who is running for retiring GOP Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake’s Senate seat, filed an appeal in January to clear his conviction of contempt of court for refusing to stop racially profiling Hispanic people at traffic stops for immigration checks.

His lawyers argued in the appeal that Judge Susan Bolton “refused to give the Sheriff a trial by jury,” and her “verdict was completely unsupported by the evidence, among numerous other reasons,” The Hill reported.

Bolton did not sentence Arpaio after Trump’s pardon, but also did not vacate her ruling against the former sheriff.
