Kerry Denies He Is Joining Presidential Race

Former Secretary of State John Kerry has stated emphatically in a tweet on Sunday that he is not running for president.

“I am absolutely not running for President,” Kerry wrote. “Any report otherwise is categorically false. I’ve been proud to campaign with my good friend Joe Biden, who is going to win the nomination, beat Trump, and make an outstanding president.”

Kerry, whose initial tweet on the subject, deleted soon thereafter, included an expletive, was responding to an NBC report that he was considering entering the 2020 presidential race over concerns about the recent strong showing by Sen. Bernie Sanders in the polls, The Hill reported.

The NBC News report said that Kerry, the unsuccessful 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, was overheard Sunday on the phone at a hotel in Des Moines describing what steps he would have to take in order to join the presidential race amid “the possibility of Bernie Sanders taking down the Democratic Party – down whole.”

Kerry told NBC that its report “is a complete and total misinterpretation based on overhearing only one side of a phone conversation. A friend who watches too much cable called me wondering whether I’d ever jump into the race late in the game if Democrats were choosing an unelectable nominee. I listed all the reasons I could not possibly do that and would not — and will not under any circumstances — do that.”
