Intel Authorization Bill Fails After Schiff Objects

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., sank an annual intelligence authorization bill on Friday, preventing it from passing before the start of the new fiscal year, The Hill reports.

Schiff, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, objected to a provision in the bipartisan Intelligence Authorization Act. The congressman reportedly raised an issue with a single paragraph in a classified annex in the legislative text. Schiff’s fellow intelligence committee leaders in the Senate and the House supported the bill.

“We got jammed up. Schiff put the torpedo in it. We don’t have the vehicle to get it done. It is all Adam Schiff,” said Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, a member of the House Intelligence Committee. “It is a big deal.”

A Democratic congressional source said that “The Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee back Schiff strongly,” and Schiff said that some members of House and Senate leadership share his objections, though he did not name them.
