Bush, the oldest living former U.S. president, will likely remain at Southern Maine Health Care for a few days for observation, said spokesman Jim McGrath.

“The former president is awake and alert, and not in any discomfort,” McGrath wrote on Twitter.

Bush arrived in Maine for the summer May 20. Coming about a month after the death of his wife, Barbara, of 73 years, the family said the 41st president was eager to return to the family compound on Walker’s Point. He has visited every summer since childhood, the only exception being the years of his World War II service.

Bush, who has a form of Parkinson’s disease and a history of pneumonia and other infections, was hospitalized in Texas last month a day after he attended the funeral of his wife, who died on April 17. He was treated for an infection that spread to his blood and stayed there for nearly two weeks.

On Saturday, Bush attended an American Legion pancake breakfast in Kennebunkport, Maine, to mark the upcoming Memorial Day with military veterans and his former national security adviser Brent Scowcroft, according to a post on Bush’s official Twitter feed. He had been scheduled to attend a Memorial Day parade in the town on Monday.

Bush uses a wheelchair and an electric scooter for mobility. He has been hospitalized several times in recent years for respiratory problems.

Bush is the father of former Republican President George W. Bush, who served two terms from 2001 to 2009, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who unsuccessfully sought the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.
