Democrats Use North Korea Sanctions to Bash Trump on Russia

Democrats are using President Donald Trump’s decision to place additional sanctions on North Korea as a way to call out what they see is inaction regarding Russia and its interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Hours after the White House announced tougher sanctions on North Korea as the reclusive nation continues to pursue a unclear arsenal, Democrats spun the issue back to Russia.

“Trumpeting more sanctions as a get-tough tactic against North Korea makes it even stranger that this White House refuses to use sanctions against Russia in response to an attack on our democracy,” Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., said, according to the Washington Examiner.

Said Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, “The president has the authority to implement these, yet continues to ignore the will of Congress. As lawmakers, we must continue to press for these sanctions, so we can protect our democracy even when our president fails to.”

The Department of Justice announced sanctions on 13 Russians and three Russian companies last week for meddling in the 2016 election. A lengthy document detailed the alleged efforts, which involved stealing Americans’ identities and setting up rogue social media accounts as part of a disinformation campaign.

The U.S. government has placed some sanctions on Russia in recent years, but some lawmakers want to see more action taken. The Department of Justice and multiple congressional committees are investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.
