Charlie Cook: Dem ‘Wave’ Poised to Wipe Out GOP House Majority

Election analyst Charlie Cook said Monday that if the midterm elections were held today, there is a 60 percent chance that House Republicans would lose their majority.

“The polls are flashing, yeah — there’s a wave,” the Cook Political Report editor said at the Institute of International Bankers convention at Trump International Hotel in Washington, according to the Washington Examiner. “There’s a big wave.”

Cook wrote last week that “Historic midterm voting patterns combined with national, state, and district-level polling data and off-year election results are combining to make a strong case for a classic midterm wave — obviously not what Republicans want to see.”

Despite Republicans’ success in passing their tax bill, the party’s failure to repeal or replace Obamacare and its lack of action on other issues has left GOP voters unenthusiastic.

“The hope among Republican officials and strategists is that the enthusiasm among GOP voters for the tax measure would be contagious, and help among the 7 in 10 voters who identify as independents or Democrats,” Cook notes. “But polling over the past two weeks suggests that the boost for President Trump and Republicans was relatively contained and short-lived.”

Although House Republicans face a difficult election, Cook said Monday that the GOP’s Senate majority is safer due to the number of Democrats facing reelection in states Trump won by wide margins.
