A Republican member of the House Budget Committee told Newsmax TV on Thursday that lawmakers will be able to find a combined solution to the issues of border security and the government shutdown if Democrats step up and start negotiating.
“I think border security is important, I stand firmly with the president . . . and I think we can do both,” Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, said on “Newsmax Now.”
“Both funding the government and providing for border security are important priorities. I think Senate Democrats, House Democrats need to come to the table and begin to negotiate.”
The government has been partially shut down since Dec. 22 after lawmakers could not agree on funding a border wall between the United States and Mexico. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have vowed not to vote for any wall funding.
“The art of compromise, the art of the possible, is what governing in the United States is all about – and you’ve gotta find a way to get to yes on something,” Johnson said. “Saying ‘no, I’m not even going to talk to you about what your side of the issue is,’ that does not solve America’s problems.
“I think there are some concerns among Democrats on Nancy Pelosi’s hard-line position.”
Johnson added he stands in solidarity with federal workers who are not receiving paychecks, as he has requested not to be paid during the shutdown either.
