A close associate of the Biden family, Alexander Mackler, appears to have worked in the Delaware U.S. Attorney’s office for years, including when whistleblowers said the office started a probe of Hunter Biden, the Washington Examiner reported on Tuesday.
The Delaware U.S. Attorney’s office had an investigation into Hunter Biden’s financial dealings by January 2019, according to testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee from Joseph Ziegler, a top IRS agent on the Hunter Biden case for years.
According to Mackler’s LinkedIn page, he was working under Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss in the office from August, 2016, to May, 2019.
Mackler’s close connections to the Biden family raise questions about whether he should ever have been permitted to be so close to a probe involving the Bidens.
In addition to Mackler working in several positions for years for the Biden family — as press secretary in Joe Biden’s Senate office, as legal counsel in his vice presidential office, on the Biden-Harris transition team and managing the late Beau Biden’s successful campaign for Delaware attorney general — he also appears to have a close personal relationship with Hunter Biden.
In emails discovered on Biden’s laptop, Mackler frequently exchanged messages with Biden and his business associates, even referring to Hunter as a “brother.”
This close relationship over many years could receive special attention as House Republicans investigate why members of Weiss’ team appeared to slow or block key parts of the Hunter Biden probe.
Mackler currently works under Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings, who herself has extensive connections to the Biden family.
The Justice Department said Monday that it would make Weiss available to testify as soon as Sept. 27, which is a week after Attorney General Merrick Garland is scheduled to appear before Congress.
